How to Repair Asphalt Shingles
The shingles on your roof are broken or damaged and you always keep promising you would repair them? Well, for some of the home chores you would better hire a professional company, because you cannot do them by yourself, like cleaning carpets for example. But some other tasks, like the ones which do not involve special materials and tools, would be good to do on your own. Here is what you need to do to repair your old and damaged asphalt shingles.
1. Choose a cool day. There are proper weather conditions for every job. Just as it is necessary to pick up a generally warm, not-so-damp day to arrange your upholstery cleaning or carpet cleaning, it is good to pick a cool day for repairing the roof. Asphalt shingles tend to get very hot in the sunshine, and this would make them very difficult to work with.
2. Make sure you take the right safety measures. Use a ladder or make yourself a step to nail into the roof in order to keep you sturdy footed. Sometimes you might need to have someone to help you. This could actually be very convenient, if you have a teenager at home. Instead of playing computer games, he could as well learn something handy.
3. Remove the old and cracked ones. Use a flat metal bar to take out the damaged shingles. Depending on whether they are nailed or glued, you might need some additional tools. Your helper should be prepared with a box of tools just next to you.
4. Position the new shingle. Put the new shingle on the right place, so that there are no cracks or holes. Glue or nail the shingle. Also, you might need to glue the edges of the shingles nearby, in order to prevent from cracking and opening. And you are done.
Some shingles, which are actually cracked might need re-gluing or re- nailing only, without replacing them. Others may be so damaged that you would need to take out almost the whole roof.
